It may help your trays, ornaments and décor resist small chips—but it can also cause bubbles, soft spots and surprise set times. Here is how to try the hack without risking your best mould.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Yes, go ahead and test it on a small indoor craft. A little white glue may make some Plaster of Paris casts less dusty and less easy to chip. But it is not a magic strength booster. The result depends on your plaster, your glue, your water and your mixing. Test one small piece before filling your favourite mould.
Why people try this hack
Plaster of Paris, often called POP, is low-cost and easy to find. It is popular for trinket trays, ornaments, candle holders, figurines, fridge magnets and seasonal décor. But thin parts can snap, sharp corners can chip and the dry surface can feel dusty. That is why many craft videos suggest adding ordinary white or yellow wood glue to the mixing water.
Most wood glue is a water-based plastic glue called polyvinyl acetate. You may see it called PVAc or PVA glue. As the cast dries, the glue can leave a thin, flexible film between some of the gypsum crystals. That film may help hold tiny cracks together and reduce surface dusting.
What the glue changes
Plaster does not harden only because it dries. The powder reacts with water and grows new gypsum crystals. Those crystals lock together and create your solid cast.
Glue changes that process. The plaster still needs water to grow its crystals. The glue also needs to dry and form its film. Along the way, it can coat the plaster, trap air or change the set time. This is why a viral recipe can work beautifully for one maker and fail for another.
DO NOT JUDGE IT AT DEMOULD
A piece can feel hard enough to remove while it is still holding a lot of water. The plaster may be set before the glue film has fully formed. Let test pieces dry fully before you compare strength, sanding or paint.
Why copied recipes give different results
A recipe that says “add one spoon of glue” leaves out too much. Was it a cup of plaster or a whole bag? Thick carpenter's glue or thin school glue? A quick-set craft plaster or a strong casting plaster? Different glues contain different amounts of water and other ingredients. Different plasters also need different amounts of water.

Troubleshooting: what went wrong?
If your piece did not turn out as planned, start here. More than one cause may apply.

A safer way to try it
There is no universal wood-glue recipe. Make a few coaster-size samples before you risk a detailed mould, a large bag of plaster or a batch of customer orders.
- Make one plain sample. Mix a small batch with plaster and water only, using the amount of water listed on the bag.
- Weigh, do not guess. Record the dry plaster, water and wet glue in grams. Write down the glue brand and product name.
- Start low. For a craft trial, compare wet glue at 2%, 4% and 6% of the dry plaster weight. These are test points, not a promised recipe.
- Count glue water. Wood glue already contains water. If you simply add it on top, you raise the total liquid and may weaken the cast.
- Blend the liquid first. Mix the glue into the measured water. Then sift the plaster slowly into the liquid and let it soak before gentle mixing.
- Keep the test fair. Use the same plaster, mould, temperature, mixing time and drying conditions for every sample.
- Judge it after drying. Compare bubbles, broken edges, surface feel, sanding, paint and water spotting only after the pieces are fully dry.
EASY EXAMPLE: WHAT DOES 4% MEAN?
For 500 g of dry plaster, 4% wet glue means 20 g of glue. A small digital kitchen scale makes this much more repeatable than tablespoons. It does not mean one part glue to two parts water, and a different glue brand may still act differently.
When to skip the hack
- You need repeatable production from batch to batch.
- The item will hold food, an open flame or something heavy.
- You need a ceramic slip-casting mould with controlled absorption.
- The part will stay outdoors, sit in water or face constant dampness.
- You sell matching sets and need every batch to look and feel the same.
- A failure would cost much more than buying the correct casting material.
A better material may cost less than a failed cast
If your goal is simply a harder, more reliable cast, a high-strength casting plaster may be easier than changing basic POP. These products are made to use less water and create a denser piece. For thin trays, detailed décor or items that must handle some dampness, a purpose-made acrylic-modified casting material may be a better fit.
