How to Pour a Clear Epoxy Tabletop Coating

A successful clear tabletop coating starts before the pour. The surface must be level, clean, dry and sealed where air can escape from porous material. The resin and room should be inside the product’s application range, and the work needs protection from dust throughout the cure.

MirrorCoat and similar coating epoxies are formulated for horizontal flood coats. They are not interchangeable with deep-pour casting resin. Confirm the maximum coat thickness, mix ratio, recoat window and heat limits for the exact product.

Step-by-step method

  1. Prepare and level

    Finish sanding as required, remove dust and contamination, mask the underside and confirm the tabletop is level in both directions. Support the piece so edges are accessible.

  2. Seal porous surfaces

    Apply the recommended seal coat to wood, cracks and exposed end grain. Allow it to reach the specified recoat stage. Fill leak paths before a flood coat.

  3. Calculate the batch

    Measure the coated area and planned thickness using the manufacturer’s coverage data. Split large jobs into manageable batches that can be mixed and placed within the working time.

  4. Measure and mix

    Condition components to the permitted temperature. Measure the exact ratio and mix steadily, scraping the sides and bottom. Transfer to a second clean container and mix again if the instructions specify a double-mix method.

  5. Pour and spread

    Pour promptly in a controlled ribbon and guide the material with a clean spreader. Do not scrape unmixed residue from the first pail onto the surface.

  6. Control bubbles and edges

    Watch for bubbles from the substrate and work edges before the resin thickens. Use only the bubble-release technique approved for the product and maintain safe ventilation and ignition control.

  7. Protect the cure

    Cover the work against dust without trapping fumes or touching the finish. Maintain temperature, keep the piece level and delay handling, sanding or service until the published cure stage.

Wear splash-resistant eye protection and chemical-resistant gloves selected for the product. Keep epoxy off your skin; repeated exposure can lead to sensitization.

Provide ventilation appropriate to the job and product. Sand only fully cured material, control dust at the tool and wear suitable respiratory protection where the risk assessment requires it.

Mix only the quantity you can apply within the stated working time. Epoxy cures faster and produces more heat when left in a deep mixing pot.

Why are bubbles appearing after I pour?

Air may be leaving porous wood, cracks or embedded objects. Seal porous surfaces and keep material and substrate temperatures stable.

Why did the epoxy remain soft?

Common causes are an incorrect ratio, incomplete mixing, scraping unmixed residue onto the work or curing below the permitted temperature.

Can I pour a thicker layer to level a warped top?

Do not exceed the product’s stated coat thickness. Correct the substrate and use a resin designed for the required depth.

When can I apply another coat?

Use the product’s recoat window. Inside that window, sanding may not be required; outside it, cleaning and abrasion normally are. Follow the current guide.
