Small bubbles can ruin an otherwise beautiful plaster casting. One simple technique used by some makers is to apply a very fine mist of 70% isopropyl alcohol—often called IPA or rubbing alcohol—to the mould before pouring. The alcohol helps the wet plaster spread across the mould surface and may prevent tiny bubbles from clinging to fine details.
A second, optional technique is to apply one very light mist over the exposed surface of the plaster immediately after pouring. This can help pop bubbles sitting on top of the wet plaster.
The key words are “very light mist.” The mould or plaster should never be soaked, flooded or left with drops of alcohol sitting on it.
Use ordinary 70% IPA in a fine-mist spray bottle. Apply only enough to lightly cover the mould surface. Do not pour IPA into the plaster mix, and do not use high-strength IPA without first diluting it.
What does isopropyl alcohol do?
Plaster slurry is made from gypsum powder and water. When it enters a mould, tiny air bubbles can become trapped between the wet plaster and the mould surface. After demoulding, these bubbles appear as pinholes, craters or missing details.
A fine mist of 70% IPA can improve how the wet plaster spreads over some mould surfaces. This is called wetting. Better wetting helps the plaster reach narrow grooves and can make it easier for trapped surface air to escape.
IPA does not remove all the air mixed into your plaster. It mainly helps with bubbles at the mould surface or bubbles sitting on top of a freshly poured casting.
Use 70% IPA—not full-strength alcohol
For this technique, use 70% isopropyl alcohol. This is the common rubbing-alcohol concentration sold by pharmacies and hardware stores.
Do not assume that stronger is better. IPA sold at 91% or 99% evaporates very quickly and contains much less water. If too much concentrated alcohol contacts unset plaster, it can interfere with normal hydration at the surface. The result may be soft, dusty, chalky, marked or poorly detailed areas.
High-strength alcohol does not automatically destroy every casting, but it provides no useful advantage for this technique and increases the chance of surface problems. Dilute it before use.
How to dilute stronger IPA to approximately 70%

Use clean distilled water when possible. Label the spray bottle clearly and never use a bottle that could be mistaken for water, cleaner or a personal-care product.
Method 1: Mist the mould before pouring
This is the main way IPA is used as a surface-wetting aid.
- Prepare the plaster correctly. Measure the water and plaster according to the manufacturer’s stated ratio.
- Use a clean, dry mould. Remove dust, loose plaster and old residue.
- Fill a fine-mist spray bottle with 70% IPA. Use plain, unscented IPA without oils, fragrance, colour or moisturizers.
- Hold the bottle approximately 20–30 cm from the mould.
- Apply one very light, even mist. Cover the detailed casting surface without soaking it.
- Inspect the mould. It should look lightly and evenly damp. There should be no drops, runs or puddles.
- Remove excess liquid. If droplets form, tip them out or gently blot an unimportant edge. Do not pour plaster over pooled alcohol.
- Pour the plaster promptly. Pour slowly into one low point and allow the plaster to rise naturally through the mould.
- Tap or vibrate gently. Light vibration may help remaining bubbles escape.
Correct coverage: Think of a light fog on the mould—not visible drops of liquid. If the IPA runs down the mould or collects in the details, you have applied too much.
Method 2: Mist the surface after pouring
A light surface mist can also help pop bubbles visible on the exposed top of a freshly poured casting.
- Pour the plaster into the mould.
- Gently tap or vibrate the mould to bring bubbles to the surface.
- Hold the fine-mist bottle approximately 20–30 cm above the plaster.
- Apply one quick, light mist over the exposed surface.
- Watch for surface bubbles to break.
- If necessary, repeat with one additional light pass only.
- Stop immediately if liquid begins to collect on the plaster.
This second method only affects the exposed back or top of the casting. It cannot reach bubbles already trapped against the detailed face of the mould. For those bubbles, lightly misting the mould or brushing in a thin face coat before the main pour is more useful.
Do not add IPA directly to the plaster mix
Do not substitute IPA for part of the measured mixing water.
Gypsum requires water to hydrate and develop strength. Adding alcohol directly to the mix changes the liquid composition and may alter set time, hardness, strength and surface quality. Use IPA only as a very light surface treatment unless your plaster manufacturer provides a tested formula stating otherwise.
IPA is not a true mould-release agent
IPA is sometimes described online as both a bubble reducer and a demoulding agent. That description is misleading.
A true mould release leaves a thin barrier between the casting and the mould. IPA evaporates and does not leave a dependable release film. Its main value here is helping wet the mould surface—not preventing the cured plaster from sticking.
- Flexible silicone moulds: Plaster will often release without an additional release agent.
- Rigid moulds: A compatible, purpose-made release agent may be required.
- Porous moulds or models: These may need to be sealed before a release agent is applied.
- Deep undercuts: IPA will not prevent a rigid casting from becoming mechanically trapped.
Always follow the mould maker’s instructions. Test any spray or release agent on a small, unimportant area before treating a valuable mould.
Can IPA damage silicone moulds?
Warning: Heavy or repeated IPA use may shorten the life of a silicone mould.
Fully cured silicone is not normally destroyed by brief contact with 70% IPA, and many silicone formulations tolerate an occasional light mist. However, silicone moulds are not all made from the same material. Prolonged exposure, repeated soaking or the use of stronger alcohol can cause certain silicones to swell, soften, change hardness or lose physical strength.
Never soak a silicone mould in IPA. Do not leave puddles in it, scrub it with alcohol or assume that 91% or 99% IPA is safe because it evaporates quickly.
Thin edges, small lettering and delicate surface details will normally show wear first. Damage may appear as:
- swelling or distortion;
- a softer or unusually dry-feeling surface;
- loss of flexibility;
- small tears around fine details;
- changes in surface texture; or
- fewer usable castings before the mould must be replaced.
To protect your mould:
- use only a very fine mist of 70% IPA;
- never allow alcohol to pool in the mould;
- avoid repeated spraying when it is not improving the casting;
- do not soak or clean the mould with IPA;
- allow the mould to dry fully between castings;
- test an unimportant area before treating the entire mould; and
- check the silicone manufacturer’s chemical-resistance instructions.
If a mould becomes swollen, sticky, unusually soft or distorted, stop using IPA and allow it to air out completely. Do not continue casting until the mould has returned to its normal dimensions and feel.
The practical trade-off: A tiny amount of IPA may reduce a few surface bubbles, but replacing a detailed silicone mould can be expensive. Use the smallest amount that produces a measurable improvement.
Why too much IPA can damage the plaster surface
IPA should be applied as a mist, not a wash. Too much liquid—especially high-strength IPA—can cause:
- soft or chalky surface areas;
- powdery patches after drying;
- uneven colour or texture;
- lost or softened detail;
- droplet marks and small craters;
- unusual setting at the surface;
- reduced paint or coating adhesion; and
- damage to an incompatible mould material.
More IPA does not mean fewer bubbles. If one or two fine passes do not help, correct the mixing, pouring or mould-preparation process instead of continuing to spray.
Important fire and health precautions
70% IPA is still flammable.
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Keep IPA away from flames, cigarettes, pilot lights, heaters, sparks and hot surfaces.
- Do not spray near running electrical equipment that could produce a spark.
- Do not heat the mould or plaster while alcohol may still be present.
- Wear splash-resistant eye protection and suitable gloves.
- Keep the container closed when it is not being used.
- Keep IPA away from children and pets.
- Never transfer IPA into a food or drink container.
- Read the safety data sheet for the exact product you purchased.
Isopropyl alcohol vapour can irritate the eyes, nose and throat. Higher exposure can cause headache, dizziness or drowsiness. Spraying creates more airborne vapour than wiping, so good ventilation and a controlled fine mist are important.
Better ways to prevent plaster bubbles
An IPA mist can help at the mould surface, but it cannot correct poor plaster preparation. For reliable results:
- Use the correct water-to-plaster ratio.
- Add plaster to water instead of pouring water onto a pile of plaster.
- Let the powder soak for the manufacturer’s recommended time.
- Mix smoothly without whipping air into the slurry.
- Keep buckets and tools clean.
- Brush a thin face coat into lettering, corners and fine texture.
- Pour slowly into one location and let the plaster rise through the mould.
- Use gentle tapping or controlled vibration.
- Ask the plaster manufacturer about compatible defoamers or wetting agents for production work.
Always run a small comparison test
Different plasters and mould materials can respond differently. Before treating a valuable mould or making a production batch, cast two small samples:
- One sample with no IPA.
- One sample using a single fine mist of 70% IPA.
Compare surface bubbles, fine detail, hardness, colour, set time and ease of demoulding. Also inspect the mould for swelling, softness, distortion or surface changes. This simple control test will tell you whether the technique actually improves your particular combination of plaster and mould.
Bottom line
Use plain 70% isopropyl alcohol in a fine-mist bottle. Lightly mist the empty mould before pouring, or apply one gentle mist to the exposed plaster surface immediately after pouring to pop visible bubbles.
Never soak the mould, leave puddles or pour IPA directly into the plaster mix. Dilute 91% or 99% IPA to approximately 70% before use. Most importantly, remember that IPA is a surface-wetting and bubble-reduction aid—not a substitute for a proper mould-release agent.
