Multiwall polycarbonate is a structured sheet with internal webs that create insulating air spaces. It is lighter than glass and available in different thicknesses, wall structures, colours and solar-control options. The correct panel depends on the span, loads, light goals, insulation target and the manufacturer’s complete glazing system.

Do not choose by thickness alone. A sheet’s internal geometry, UV-protected face, support spacing and approved connectors determine how it performs once installed.

Step-by-step method

  1. Define the application

    Separate roof, wall, interior partition and temporary glazing requirements. Record expected snow, wind, impact, moisture and service temperature.

  2. Set light and heat goals

    Clear panels maximize visible light but may increase heat. Opal, bronze and solar-control options change light diffusion and solar gain. Review measured product data rather than colour names alone.

  3. Compare structure and thickness

    Evaluate U-value, light transmission, weight, minimum bending radius where applicable and span tables. A thicker sheet is not automatically suitable for wider unsupported spans.

  4. Design around available lengths

    Orient sheets so flutes drain and plan lengths that minimize cross joints. Confirm transport, handling and cutting constraints before finalizing framing.

  5. Select the complete glazing system

    Choose compatible joiners, edge closures, tapes, fasteners and flashings. Mixing unrelated components can compromise movement, drainage and weather sealing.

  6. Plan thermal movement

    Use the manufacturer’s expansion allowance and hole-sizing rules. Long dark panels can move substantially with temperature.

  7. Validate structure and warranty

    Have the support design checked where required, especially for overhead or occupied structures. Confirm slope, fastening and accessory requirements needed to preserve the warranty.

Use the system’s specified solid tape at the high end and ventilating or anti-dust treatment at the drainage end unless the manufacturer directs otherwise.

Can I use any clear silicone?
