Identify and inspect
Confirm whether the surface is wood, laminate, gelcoat, metal, cured epoxy or another coating. Probe for rot, delamination, corrosion and weak material. Preparation cannot make an unsound substrate structural.

Wash off salts, dirt, grease, wax and release agents with the method specified for that substrate. Use clean wipes and change them frequently so contaminants are lifted away rather than redistributed.

Dry thoroughly
Allow wash water and cleaning agents to leave the surface. Verify suspect wood, cores and laminates rather than relying on touch alone. Trapped moisture can reduce adhesion and later create blisters.

Abrade to the required profile
Sand sound material evenly with the specified grit. Feather coating edges, avoid polishing the surface and do not cut deeply into reinforcement unless the repair design calls for it.

Vacuum at the source, then use the manufacturer’s final cleaning method. Keep bare hands, silicone sprays and dirty air hoses away from the prepared zone.

What grit should I use?
Use the range specified by the epoxy and coating manufacturer. Coarse sanding can damage fibres; very fine sanding may not create the required profile.
Can I wipe epoxy with acetone?
Use only the cleaner and sequence specified for the substrate and product. Solvents can create exposure and fire risks and may spread contamination.
Do I need to sand between epoxy coats?
