How to Choose the Right Adhesive for Plastic, Metal and Wood

There is no universal glue for every material. A successful adhesive joint depends on the substrate, surface energy, joint geometry, gap, load, temperature, moisture, chemical exposure and required working time. Product strength claims mean little when the adhesive cannot wet the surface or the joint peels instead of loading in shear.

Start with the exact materials, including coatings and grades. 'Plastic' is not enough: acrylic, PVC, ABS, HDPE and polycarbonate can require very different chemistries and preparation.

Step-by-step method

  1. Name the materials precisely

    Identify resin family, alloy, wood species, coatings and surface treatments. Ask the supplier when a material grade is unknown.

  2. Define the service

    Record load type, movement, temperature, water, UV, chemicals and whether the bond is structural, sealing, cosmetic or temporary.

  3. Review joint geometry

    Increase overlap where possible and avoid peel or cleavage loads. Plan a controlled bond-line thickness rather than squeezing the adhesive to nothing.

  4. Shortlist compatible products

    Use manufacturer selection data. Compare substrate approval, gap capability, working time, fixture time, cure conditions, flexibility and service limits.

  5. Prepare exactly as specified

    Cleaning, abrasion, flame treatment, corona treatment and primers are not interchangeable. Follow the adhesive and substrate manufacturer’s sequence and timing.

  6. Apply and fixture

    Meter and mix accurately, fill the intended bond area and hold the assembly without movement. Avoid excessive pressure and confirm squeeze-out without creating a starved joint.

  7. Test before production

    Bond actual offcuts, cure them under realistic conditions and test the failure mode. A useful test breaks the substrate or cohesive adhesive layer rather than peeling cleanly from an unprepared surface.

Safety

Read each adhesive’s current SDS. Ventilation, glove material, eye protection and ignition controls depend on the chemistry.

Do not clean skin with solvents. Keep two-part components and mixer nozzles organized to prevent cross-contamination.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the adhesive peel cleanly from one side?

That usually points to an adhesion or preparation problem at that interface. Confirm material identity, cleaner, abrasion, primer and application timing.

Can I glue HDPE?

Standard adhesives usually perform poorly on untreated HDPE. Use a system specifically approved for HDPE with its required preparation, or use mechanical fastening or plastic welding.

Is a stronger adhesive always better?

No. Flexibility, temperature, moisture resistance, cure conditions and joint design can matter more than a headline strength value.

How large should a test be?

Large enough to reproduce the real surfaces, bond thickness, preparation and load direction. Keep a control sample and record the cure conditions.
