Start with the material family
- Silicone moulds: compare Mold Max, OOMOO, Dragon Skin and Mold Star products using the exact grade’s instructions.
- Brush-on moulds: review Rebound 25 and the specified support-shell method.
- Casting plastics: Smooth-Cast 300 and other Smooth-Cast grades have distinct working and cured properties.
- Urethane, foam and specialty materials: compare the listed VytaFlex, PMC, FlexFoam-iT!, FOAM-iT! and TASK grades for the actual job.
Compare working properties, not just package size
Cure chemistry, Shore hardness, viscosity, pot life, demould time and mix ratio determine suitability. Different grades may require different release agents, preparation or handling. Materials grouped in a series are not automatically substitutes, and kit volume is not necessarily the same as kit weight.
Prepare the master and choose a release agent
Start with the manufacturer’s sealer and release-agent reference. Compare Universal Mold Release with Ease Release 200 against the material bulletin. Test a small area when compatibility is uncertain.
Use Smooth-On technical support and the current technical bulletin and SDS for the exact grade. Special claims such as food contact, skin use or heat resistance must be supported for that specific product and process.
